The German standard (DIN) 66399 specifies three protection classes according to which data media should be classified in terms of their need for protection:
- Protection class 1 – normal requirement for internal data
- Protection class 2 – high requirement for confidential data
- Protection class 3 – very high requirement for particularly secret data
