Experience report: From university to professional life - a student dropout tells us
Dropping out of university is not an easy decision - but sometimes this step leads to a new, promising path. After dropping out of university, Malte made a conscious decision to do an apprenticeship at Vecoplan, and this decision proved to be a hit. In the following interview, he explains why he dropped out of university and the benefits of practical work at Vecoplan.
How did you decide to drop out of university?
‘I studied accounting, tax and business law, but at some point I realised that I wasn't interested in pure theory. I wanted more practical relevance. After thinking about it for a while, I decided to drop out of university - it wasn't an easy decision, but in retrospect it was the best one for me.’
Why did you decide to do an apprenticeship at Vecoplan?
‘Vecoplan appealed to me straight away because it gave me the opportunity to combine theory and practice. I already realised during the interview that the company places great value on personal responsibility and teamwork. I also find the topic of recycling and sustainability super exciting - I wanted to do something meaningful.’
How is your apprenticeship going so far and would you recommend an apprenticeship to other university dropouts?
‘My training as a construction mechanic is going really well! I'm involved in real projects right from the start and get a lot of support from my colleagues. It just feels right to get stuck in and take on responsibility. I can recommend an apprenticeship at Vecoplan to anyone looking for a practice-orientated path - especially if studying wasn't the right choice.’
